Keyboard, Vocals

I was born in Traverse City, Michigan, where I grew up immersed in music at my father’s nightclub, Dill’s Olde Towne Saloon. Some of my earliest memories are of that room—watching bands, feeling the energy and absorbing every sound imaginable: rock, soul, blues, R&B, jazz and more. Along with being a club owner, my dad played guitar, sang and produced extravagant shows. My mother was a prolific visual artist and painter, as well as a singer and dancer. Music and the arts weren’t just present in my childhood—they were the fabric of my life and the foundation of my adventures.

After an incredible musical upbringing, I attended Western Michigan University to study music. There I met some of my closest friends and future bandmates. During that time my friends and I formed a band that eventually led us to Los Angeles where we performed as Population Game.

Los Angeles opened the door to countless new adventures. I’ve had the privilege of performing with an incredible range of artists, including Sheila E., The Emotions, Billy Ray Cyrus, Lea Michele, Rita Wilson, Windborne Music, Berlin, Meat Loaf and many other talented bands and artists.

I’ve also had the honor of being an Associate Music Director / Arranger for American Idol for the past eight seasons. The show has been an incredible opportunity to create musical moments for so many gifted singers and artists, while working alongside an amazing team of musicians and creatives.

At the core of everything, writing music has always been my greatest passion. My most recent project, World in a Suitcase is original music featuring some of my closest friends and favorite musicians on the planet. Albums 1, 2 and 3 are currently available. Additional original side projects include NUMBr CRNCHr and vIDEO fRAMER.  All music available at justinavery.com.

I feel incredibly fortunate to live a life surrounded by music. It’s truly an honor. Back in junior high, I formed a trio with my best friends and played keys and vocals at our local downtown hangout. Our set included “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is” and “Saturday in the Park.” The music of Chicago taught me about risk-taking, creativity and musical adventure and it remains a cornerstone of my musical identity. I’m deeply grateful to perform this music with such an incredible group of people.

Much love to all my friends.

Endless love to my wife, Alicia, and our two daughters, Everly and Ella, who constantly support my musical adventures.

And heartfelt thanks to my mom, Dianne; my dad, Larry; and my brother, Kyle, for being my support system from the very beginning.

I am beyond grateful for the charmed life I live.
